 Cashmere is a super soft luxurious type of wool that comes from the undercoat of the Kashmir goat, which is native to central Asia and the Gobi Desert. It has been used for centuries to make sweaters, clothing, scarves, and sleepwear. Considered by many to be worn only by the elite due to its price. It is highly valued for warmth and insulating properties. It takes 3-4 goats to produce the wool for one coat. This is why fine cashmere products are so expensive. Cashmere comes in Grades A-C with A being the finest and more dense and used by luxury brands, B being a bit thinner and C being the lowest on the scale. All levels of cashmere are soft and velvety to the skin. Unlike sheep wool, goat cashmere wool tends to be less itchy and many people with sensitive skin actually have less or no allergic reaction to cashmere. I happen to be one of those people, if I wear wool from a sheep I itch and break out into hives, but when I wear a cashmere sweater I do not react at all. Also a quick note on caring for cashmere. Do not put cashmere in the washing machine and dryer...ALWAYS dry clean!! It maintains the fibers and softness and it is wool, after all. Also, moths like wool so throw some cedar wood blocks or they come on hangers (which I will share below) in you closet or drawers to ward away the moths. If you own a cedar trunk then store all cashmere garments inside. Cashmere today is not only for the elite but for everyone to enjoy. I will not travel without a cashmere sweater or wrap. Perfect for the plane and a year-round natural fiber to layer over a tee.
