In 1998 I decided to take some off from my nursing career at Boston Children's Hospital. I spent many years as a solid organ transplant nurse and wanted to spend time being home with my two small children, Ainsley and Chase. I relocated to Rhode Island from the Boston area with my family. During this time the vision for RIBBIT was born.
It started with an idea in 2002 and an old sewing machine! I created a simple handsewn fabric hairband for my daughter, Ainsley. She wore it to school and the story starts there...
Everyone wanted to know how they could buy one. So I started sewing them by hand and selling them at trunk shows and out of my house. Creating a brand was the next step. I sketched out the frog image and created my own logo and had it trademarked. I then had a sewn in label created and started designing and creating multiple styles. I used designer fabrics, trims, grosgrain ribbons and created a preppy, modern and classic selection of hairbands that fit girls ages 4-10 years of age. I added an elastic back to create an adjustable fit and had a logo label sewn in each hairband. With my initial success in retail I decided to take the brand in a wholesale direction. I outsourced the manufacturing here in the USA which enabled me to create stock in all of my styles. I then reached out to children's boutiques and shops all over the USA and started filling lots and lots of orders. They were selling! From California to Martha's Vineyard, I had over 50 wholesale accounts. Girls from everywhere loved them. I kept this business model for many years and then the internet, cellphones, and big box stores came on the scene and many small local children's shops just could not compete. I lost many wholesale accounts due to stores closing. I decided at that time to open my own retail shop online and sold the hairbands successfully that way for years. If you can't beat them join them. Last year I closed down the retail shop and became a lifestylist, started this BLOG, and also work as an Amazon Associate. I now just offer the RIBBIT hairband line exclusively through my ETSY store. I wanted the RIBBIT line to have it's own platform and Etsy really is a great marketplace for them. I am thrilled that my classic branding and hairband designs have remained in style since 2002!
